idiom

to be blindly arrogant; to have ridiculous conceit; to think oneself big while being ignorant of one's own smallness

Etymology: During the Han Dynasty, the kingdom of Yelang (in present-day western Guizhou) was the largest among the southwestern neighboring states. The king of Yelang once asked a Han envoy: "Is your Han Dynasty larger, or is our Yelang kingdom larger?" (Recorded in the 'Records of the Grand Historian: Biography of the Southwestern Barbarians'). Later used metaphorically to describe those who are ignorant yet arrogantly self-important.
