noun

Islamic calendar; Hijri calendar; Muslim calendar

A purely lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. Odd-numbered months have 30 days and even-numbered months have 29 days. There are 11 leap years in every 30-year cycle, achieved by adding an extra day to the last month. The calendar begins from the Hijra in 622 CE (July 16, 622), when Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina. In China, it is also commonly referred to as 回历 (Huílì).
