Kitchen God; Stove God; Zaoshen (the household deity in Chinese folk religion who oversees the kitchen and reports family deeds to heaven)

A central figure in Chinese folk religion and Taoism. Traditionally worshipped on the 23rd or 24th of the twelfth lunar month with offerings of sweet malt candy (糖瓜) to 'stick' his mouth shut so he cannot report bad deeds, or to ensure he speaks sweetly of the family. Often depicted with his wife, the Stove Goddess (灶王奶奶).
