"Chinese Measure Words: The Complete Guide"
What Are Chinese Measure Words?
In English, you can say "three books" or "five people" directly. In Chinese, you need a measure word (量词, liàngcí) between the number and the noun: "three běn books" (三本书), "five gè people" (五个人).
Think of measure words as classifiers — they categorize nouns by shape, type, or function. There are over 150 measure words in Chinese, but you only need about 20–30 to handle everyday conversation.
The Universal Measure Word: 个 (gè)
个 is the most common measure word. It works for people, abstract concepts, and many general objects.
- 一个人 (yī gè rén) — one person
- 三个苹果 (sān gè píngguǒ) — three apples
- 几个问题 (jǐ gè wèntí) — a few questions
When in doubt, use 个. Native speakers will understand you even if it is not the "correct" measure word.
Measure Words for People
While 个 works for people, these are more precise:
- 位 (wèi) — polite/formal, for respected people
- 一位老师 (yī wèi lǎoshī) — one teacher (polite)
- 名 (míng) — formal, for professionals
- 一名医生 (yī míng yīshēng) — one doctor

Verb Measure Words
These count occurrences of an action:
- 次 (cì) — times (general)
- 我去过三次中国 (Wǒ qùguo sān cì Zhōngguó) — I have been to China three times
- 遍 (biàn) — times (complete process, start to finish)
- 请再说一遍 (Qǐng zài shuō yī biàn) — Please say it again
- 下 (xià) — quick, casual actions
- 等一下 (děng yīxià) — wait a moment
Common Mistakes Learners Make
1. Using 个 for everything
While 个 is a safe fallback, overusing it sounds unnatural. Start adding the correct measure words as you learn new nouns.
2. Forgetting the measure word with 这/那
"This book" is 这本书 (zhè běn shū), not just 这书. The measure word is required with demonstratives.
3. Using the wrong animal measure word
Dogs take 条 (tiáo) because they are long and flexible, not 只 (zhī). Fish also take 条.
4. Confusing 次 and 遍
次 counts occurrences; 遍 counts completions from start to finish. "I watched the movie three times" uses 遍 if you mean you watched it all the way through each time.
