Tibetan calendar; traditional luni-solar calendar of the Tibetan people
Originated during the Tang Dynasty under influence from Chinese calendars. It is structurally similar to the lunar calendar (农历) but employs unique 'duplicate days' (重日) and 'missing days' (缺日) to ensure the 15th day of each month coincides with the full moon and to accommodate religious observances. Years are designated using the five elements (五行) and the twelve zodiac animals (十二生肖), such as 'Fire Rooster year' (火鸡年) or 'Earth Dog year' (土狗年).
We celebrate the New Year according to the Tibetan calendar.
